Camel Safari or Jeep Safari in Jaisalmer: How to Choose

Both safaris end in the same place, on the dunes at sunset, but they feel very different. Here is how to decide which suits your group.

Camel safari

A camel safari moves at walking pace with a handler leading each camel. It is quiet and traditional, and the rocking motion lets you take in the landscape slowly. Rides can be as short as twenty minutes or run for a few hours.

Mounting and dismounting involve a forward and backward lurch as the camel stands and kneels. Hold on firmly. People with back or knee problems should choose a shorter ride.

Jeep safari

A jeep safari climbs and drops over larger dunes in an open 4x4. It is fast, bumpy and fun, and covers more ground in less time. It suits teenagers and groups of friends. It is less suited to pregnant travellers, very young children or anyone with neck or back trouble.

Doing both

Many visitors take a short jeep safari in the afternoon and a camel ride for the final stretch to the sunset point. This gives the thrill and the calm in one evening.

Quick decision
