Sam Sand Dunes: A Practical Guide for First-Time Visitors

Where the dunes are, how to reach them, what happens in an evening at camp and how to avoid the busiest ridge.

Sam is the best known dune area near Jaisalmer and the place most visitors mean when they talk about a desert camp. It lies roughly 40 km west of the city on the road towards the Desert National Park.

Getting there

Most people travel by car or jeep in the afternoon. The drive takes about an hour, longer if you stop at Kuldhara or Khaba on the way. Public transport exists but is infrequent, so a private transfer is the simpler option if you are staying overnight.

A typical evening

Guests usually arrive in the late afternoon, check in and set out on a camel or jeep safari to reach the dunes before sunset. After dark the camp hosts folk music and dance around a central area, followed by dinner. Mornings are quiet, with sunrise on the sand before breakfast.

Finding a calmer spot

The ridge closest to the road can be crowded at sunset. A longer camel ride or a short walk away from the main cluster usually gives cleaner views and fewer people in your photographs.

Sam or Khuri?

Khuri, south-west of Jaisalmer, has smaller dunes and a more village-like feel. Sam has larger dunes and more camps. If you want the classic desert evening, Sam is the natural choice; if you prefer quiet, ask about Khuri.
