Planning a Family Desert Trip to Jaisalmer
Pacing, safari lengths, food and sleep: practical advice for travelling to the dunes with children and grandparents.

The desert is a wonderful place for children: endless sand to run on, camels up close and a sky full of stars. A little planning keeps the trip easy for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents.
Keep the days short
Plan sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon and rest through the middle of the day. In the fort, a two to three hour visit is plenty with young children.
Choose the right safari
A short camel ride is usually enough for children. Let them ride with an adult if they are small. Jeep safaris over large dunes are bumpy, so skip the steepest runs with very young children or older relatives.
Camp choice matters
Look for tents or cottages with attached bathrooms and ask whether extra beds are possible. Share children's ages when you enquire so the camp can plan beds and meals.
Food and water
Camp dinners are generally vegetarian Rajasthani food, often with milder options on request. Carry snacks and plenty of water for the drive and the dunes.
Evenings and nights
The cultural programme starts after dark and can run late. Ask whether dinner can be served early. Nights in winter are cold, so pack warm layers for everyone. See the Family Desert Weekend sample itinerary.
